Chapter 16 – Thursday, the funeral.

Rain hadn’t slept again. She worried about the funeral, and the mistakes she could make, and fighting her raging tide of emotions. She was still angry as a wet cat about the way Darryl had treated her and the way Jake had acted. She had a well of sadness threatening to overflow when she thought about the funeral.

She was also impatient to shut down the demon gate and deal with the demons. Her hands itched to do violence, to get Rachel the revenge she’d asked for. Whenever she relaxed enough to fall asleep, a flashing sign in her brain appeared that read “revenge”.

When dawn finally broke she had managed an hour or so of dozing. She got a tiny scrap of sleep before her family were up and about, making noise as they moved around the house.

She buried her head under her pillow, but she couldn’t ignore the pounding on her bedroom door or Saff’s voice calling her name.

‘Go away!’ She shouted, even though it was pointless. When she heard the door open she threw her pillow in the direction of her door.

‘Nice try, but you missed.’ Saff came in and sat on the bed. Her hand found the small of her back. ‘We have to go soon.’

‘What, why soon?’ Rain rolled over, squinting as her sister pulled the curtains open. ‘It’s not ‘til 11 right?’

‘The parentals want to take us out for breakfast first.’ Saff dressed demurely in plain black with a tasteful pair of pearl earrings today.

‘Joy. Like it’s one of our birthdays or something?’

‘Be nice,’ Saff said, rubbing Rain’s back. ‘They’re doing the best they can.’

‘Gimme ten minutes.’

It was awkward in the car. Rain had put on a black lace dress she’d found in the back of her wardrobe, she couldn’t remember when she’d bought it, but it must have been from one of her op-shopping excursions with Rachel and Jacky. When the three of them went op-shopping they invariably fought over some perfect piece of clothing and someone would start sulking. Rain generally ended up buying something weird while her mind was clouded with annoyance.

Ellen made a face when she saw Rain in the dress, but Rain ignored it and Ellen didn’t say anything.

Her parents talked about the weather, because that was normal. Rain concentrated on staring out the window. Rachel hadn’t made an appearance today and Rain’s stomach was knotting itself up. Were they wrong and what Rachel needed was her body to be buried? Was this whole revenge thing ridiculous?

Breakfast was at a cafe called Rose Absolute, and although she wasn’t hungry Rain ordered the big breakfast special, a huge plate of sausages, eggs, bacon, hash browns and toast.

‘You can’t eat all that,’ Saff said when it arrived. Rain privately agreed, but the smell of the bacon and the look of the eggs stirred something in her stomach. The smell made her ravenous.

‘Don’t eat too quickly, darling, you’ll make yourself sick,’ Ellen said around a mouthful of yoghurt and muesli.
